Some stories touch the soul — the story of Dukhu Majhi, fondly known as the “Tree Man of West Bengal,” is one such tale of love, sacrifice, and devotion to Mother Nature. For more than five decades, this humble man from a small village in Birbhum, West Bengal, has planted over 5,000 trees with his own hands. With no wealth, no fame, and no resources, Dukhu Majhi carried only an unbreakable spirit and a heart full of compassion for the earth. In 2024, his lifelong dedication was recognized nationally when the Government of India honoured him with the Padma Shri, the country’s fourth-highest civilian award, for his extraordinary contribution to environmental conservation and afforestation. But behind this recognition lies a quiet struggle — a man who gave shade and oxygen to thousands continues to live in hardship, often without the basic comforts he deserves. When we at Naihati New Life Society learned about his condition, we couldn’t stay silent. With deep respect and gratitude, we extended a humble support of ₹50,000 along with essential grocery items to help him and his family. It was a small gesture compared to his immense contribution to humanity — but it came from our hearts. As we met him, his eyes filled with tears, not of sorrow, but of simple gratitude. And in that moment, we were reminded that true greatness doesn’t come from what we have, but from what we give. We salute Dukhu Majhi — a real hero who has silently nurtured life and hope for generations. May his green legacy continue to inspire us all to plant a seed of change, no matter how small. 🌱Let us all remember:
“The hands that plant trees are the hands that shape the future.”
